Regenerative Periodontal Surgery – From the Boston Cosmetic Dentistry Experts

In the old days, when a patient had gum (tissue) and bone loss due to periodontal disease, a periodontist had few treatment options. Typically, the dental professional would graft new gum tissue for the patient in order to prevent future tissue, tooth, and bone loss – but the result wasn’t pretty.

Now periodontists can use regenerative periodontal surgery. Unlike osseous surgery, where the periodontist reshapes the bone beneath the teeth, regenerative periodontal surgery allows the periodontist to actually replace the lost bone.

Before this procedure can proceed, the patient undergoes an initial cleaning and root planing. During the procedure, Dr. Favaloro pulls back the gums in order to clean the roots of the teeth and to fill in any missing bone with bone grafts. The gums are then replaced over the teeth and stitched into place.

The beauty of regenerative periodontal surgery is that in addition to replacing lost bone, it allows Dr. Favaloro to reshape and/or replace the normal contour of the gum line – meaning, the gums return to their normal pre-disease state.

Dr. Favaloro uses two types of bone grafting: either harvesting bone directly from another area of the patient’s body (also called autogenous), using synthetic bone, or bone purchased from a bone bank.

Often referred to as the Gold Standard because the doctor is working with live bone from the person’s body, autogenous grafting ensures the best success since there is no immune reaction. However, the procedure may also require a second surgery unless bone can be harvested from elsewhere on the jaw.
