Tooth Colored Fillings and Periodontal Care

Taking care of your teeth is the best thing you can do for yourself. Don't let the fear of dentists keep you from getting the regular care you need. Call our office at 617-327-1350, to schedule your next appointment -- even if you haven't seen a dentist in years due to fear or embarrassment. We guarantee that once you visit our office, you won't know you're at the dentist. In addition to advanced cosmetic dentistry procedures, our oral health care services include:

Tooth Colored Fillings
For years experts within the dental industry have debated the pros and cons of "silver" or silver amalgam fillings. The silver used to fill cavities is comprised of 50% mercury and some of the drawbacks of silver amalgam fillings include mercury vapor being released and harming those people with weakened immune systems. Silver amalgam fillings, while durable, can cause teeth to turn gray and as you age, they can expand, causing your teeth to crack or break.

This is why we recommend bonded aesthetic fillings -- otherwise known as "tooth colored fillings." These fillings are the same color as your teeth, so when you smile, no one sees the unsightly gray fillings. Bonded aesthetic fillings require less tooth to be removed during the procedure and once in place, strengthen the tooth, insulate better against hot and cold, and if they wear down, are easily be repaired.

If you have silver amalgam fillings and would like to have them replaced, please call our office at 617-327-1350 for your private consultation. Of course, if you have a new cavity, we can quickly and painlessly fill it for you with a bonded aesthetic filling.

Periodontal Care
Periodontal disease is a gum disease that affects the bone surrounding the teeth. Women are especially prone to periodontal disease due to hormonal changes which affect blood supply to the gums and the gums' response to bacterial irritants. Oral contraceptives and menopausal medications (both prescribed and OTC) can inflame the gums as does pregnancy.

To prevent periodontal disease, be sure to brush and floss regularly. Preventative measures also include regular cleanings and treatment by your dental professional. If you've been pre-disposed to periodontal disease or have been diagnosed but are too afraid to visit a dentist, we can help you. Dr. Smith and Dr. Abboud specialize in pain-free cleanings and treatments that will leave you feeling relaxed and comfortable.

Preventative Dental Hygiene
Dr. Helaine Smith and her staff are continually focused on the prevention of oral health disease and other problems. Comprehensive oral exams and cleanings are the best method for checking for oral cancer and the beginning of periodontal disease. During your routine check-up, Dr. Smith will carefully evaluate your mouth, and if she notices any problems with your gums or connective tissue, will referr you to Dr. Abboud, her in-house periodontist.

As part of your regular dental check-up, Dr. Smith will show you the best methods for maintaining your oral health and your new cosmetic dentistry work (ie: implants, veneers, etc). With so many products on the market, including the new high-speed electronic toothbrushes and tarter control toothpastes, it's hard to know which product is right for you and your teeth. Dr. Smith will help you choose the right products.
